Henry E. Golubiewski died on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Twin Cedars Senior Living in Shohola, PA. He was 99. Born in Minneola, NY, he previously lived in Bayonne and Rockaway Twp. for many years before moving to Pennsylvania in 2005.
He served in the Army during WWII in the 609th Tank Destroyer Division, and was also in the Marine Reserves during peacetime. Mr. Golubiewski was employed by Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, retiring in 1973; prior to that he had worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
He was formerly a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway, a member of the Boy Scouts of America, a Camp Ranger at Camp Lewis in Rockaway Twp., and a member of the American Legion.
Henry Golubewski worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the late 1930s. He and his crew were also Marine Corps Reservists. His entire platoon shipped out to the Philippines in 1940, but Henry was kept back as an 'essential' worker.
In 1942 Henry reenlisted in the Army. He trained with small antitank guns and howitzers on half-tracks. In September 1944 he landed at Normandy with the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion, (Motto: Find, Fight, Finish). (M36 tank destroyer - Wikipedia)
Among Henry's credits, he rode an M-36 "Jackson" Tank Destroyer with General George Patton across Europe. In Austria they were refitted with heavier guns. As Henry later recalled in private discussions, the heavier guns slowed them down, much to his dislike.
For more than five and a half decades, from 1955 - 2011, Henry served as the Camp Ranger. Known for his firm demeanor and his strong commitment to maintaining a safe and well maintained camp, Henry deservedly earned the love and respect of the entire Camp Lewis community.
